Just got back yesterday night. Nelson, SC and Les should have been reached home this afternoon. Well, pretty tire though just 3+ days of shooting. Wished we can stay for more days in this lovely valley. The weather was super good where it rained before and after our trip. :cheers:

Have to agree that the place is amazing with a sense of tranquility amid a dense population of forestry with lush greenery and towering trees.

Waking up in the morning with breathe of fresh air accompanied by melodies of singing birds and the call of the primates amid the mist filled valley forest is such a captivating experience.

Thanks to the rest of the gang for such great company.

A huge thanks to LC for organising the trip. It is such a beautiful place. The mist and night shots give a perfect example of the tranquility of the place. My only regret is that I could not stay there longer:cry: . I am truely envious of those Tropical Biology guys staying there for a whole month!!

I will start posting photos (some of them actually appear quite good, a rarity for me:) ) when I have got my IDs confirmed.

LC, Chliaria othona is not found on Borneo. I believe that this is Chliaria tora minima, though I have been unable to find any pictures of it on the net to confirm this.

Two other tailed Lycaenids for which I can not confirm IDs on the internet.
1) This could be Cheritra pallida or one of the Drupadia species, D. cinderella, D. cindi, D. cineas or D. cinesia. I think the tail is too long for the Drupadia species but I am not sure.
2) I think this may be Eooxylides etias, but again, no photos found on the net to confirm. - Update 18.7.2011- ID confirmed , Thanks Seow.

Nelson, I love the upperside Terinos shot. I originally thought that it was T. atlita( it is very similar to T. a. miletum from N. Thailand), but now seeing the underside, I must agree that it is T. clarissa nympha.

Second unkown looks like a typical male malay baron(E. monina)?:grin2:

Hi to all.
The unknown Tanaecia is T. orphne, a Bornean endemic.Unique. The inner spots of the forewing are ovate as a result of the arrrowheads pointing outwards insteads of inwards.
The baron is Euthalia monina ilka. The male of E. monina is the only Euthalia with blue scalings on the forewing. Due credit to young Aaron.
The unknown Discophora should be D. sondaica, but I can not confirm it.

Thank you very much, as that is one of the very few species from the trip we could not identify with any certainty. We had noticed that these fleches (arrowheads) were facing the wrong way when compared to all known Peninsular species. Is T. orphne the only species with these wrong facing fleches, as we photographed a second specimen that had these, but looked slightly different? The pale markings on the hindwing are much less extensive on this other one.

Hi to all.
The unknown Tanaecia is T. orphne, a Bornean endemic.Unique. The inner spots of the forewing are ovate as a result of the arrrowheads pointing outwards insteads of inwards.
The baron is Euthalia monina ilka. The male of E. monina is the only Euthalia with blue scalings on the forewing. Due credit to young Aaron.
The unknown Discophora should be D. sondaica, but I can not confirm it.

As far as I know there are only three endemic Tanaecia in Borneo, and only two are in the T. pelea group. T he other T. amisa is white-banded.

This should be the male. Typically in the pelea group, the sagittate markings on the hindwing are short and somewhat detached in the male, while in the female it tends to be joined into a zigzag.
If you made a search for Tanaecia lutala, the website is at the bottom of page 1, some Finnish museum or university. Anyway T. lutala have the normal orientation.

I was confused when I saw that T. lutala is a member of the pelea group ( somewhat like T. aruna ). On checking,I realised that someone have upgraded many of the insular races into full species. Borneo's pelea and aruna have been replaced by T. valmikis and T. lutala. By the old reckoning, there are only two endemics, T. amisa and T. orphne. Iniatially I was unsure whether there were any new discovery that might resembles T. orphne, but now I am certain that there are none.

Yes, T. valmikis was one of the 'species' I had found listed. There is still another one, T. elone. I got these names from the funet.fi website (another Finnish University site).

T. elone, probably endemic to Sumatra only, have as stated in C&P4, a blue-shaded white band on the hindwing.

After much sleuthing, i realised that this is in fact female Tanaecia iapis ambalika f. ambalika(the other, f. magnolia resembles the male; some classifications recognise cocytina as a distinct species and place this as T. cocytina ambalika instead)). It matches the figure in D'abrera perfectly. It is the only subspecies of iapis/cocytina, strangely, to have the sagittate markings pointing outwards away from the base of the wings. Probably the only Tanaecia to have this arrangement.

True T. orphne has the sagittate markings in the "normal" orientation. Female orphne resembles T. aruna but the spots in spacs 2 and 3 on the forewing are more rounded(C&P4). Male orphne is very distinctive.

This (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/64610575) probably is the only correct image of female orphne.

The other photo, in which the sagittate markings are reversed as well but the butterfly appears whiter is either a variant or another form of iapis ambalika or one of the numerous other subspecies of iapis found on Borneo which i don't know. (Unless someone has a copy of Seitz' Macroleps at hand right now)

Yes, it is most frustrating seeing all the names listed on the funet website but without being able to see the actual specimens.

Funet even lists one subspecies, uposatha, which is from the Banggai islands(off Sulawesi), very far outside the main range of this species. I'm very curious what this one looks like.
