Went up into the hills today, c550m. I saw this Silverline, which I originally thought was S. lohita. However, it was much larger than the usual specimens of that species. Could this be S. seliga seliga (Large Long-banded Silverline)?

SK, Seow, anyone, your comments would be welcome as this would be a new species for me.

I am going up there every week at the moment, as I want to find the Purlisa gigantea (Giant Imperial) was has been seen up there two years ago.

Well, Les. this is a real toughie.

After staring at a dozen S. lohita underside I was no nearer the solution until I try to make sense of the baffling key, till something struck me.
So here are the differences.

In lohita, the marginal buff line is usually broader and always clear and unsullied.
In seliga this buff line is narrowed by the broader marginal brown band and is sullied.

Most importantly the submarginal buff area in lohita is as wide, wider or at the least 3/4 of the postdiscal band next to it .
In seliga this submarginal area is very narrow, being less than 1/2 the width of the postdiacal band next to it.

On the underside the free portion of the tornal lobe in lohita is plain black.
In seliga, the lobe is marked with crimson(or orange) on its inner margin.
By a fortiuous circumstance, this individual which have lost its tornal lobe retains the inner margin of it as a dangling third orange tail.

Seliga is distinctly larger than lohita.

So what you have is Spindasis seliga

BTW, if you're still unaware, your large A is A. aedias.

Thank you for confirming what I suspected. A +1 :jumjoy: , very rare for me these days on Samui.

Re the Arhopala, yes thanks, I also have the large sized A. aedias. And yes, I noticed the P. trachala amendment.
