Horace, you asked about the variations of the Common Evening Browns. So far, in Singapore, the typical variant is what we normally see. What you shot is obviously one of the variants, and so far, I've only come across one individual at Chestnut area some years back.
The butterfly is very variable in Malaysia, and there are several variants ranging from something that looks close to a Palm King's vertical stripes, to the mottled look that we usually encounter.
Here's a shot that was taken some time back in Penang. Though not exactly like what you shot, but the markings are different from the usual Common Evening Brown that we usually encounter here in Singapore.
