Our month-long trip began with a week at Taman Negara. This is such a wonderful park with an extensive trail system and wilderness areas. I've seen a large number of birds here over the years and I wanted to show my friends some of these. This year was difficult, however, due to the muddy trails. Taman Negara received a big dump of rain the week before we arrived and then thundershowers on most afternoons/nights. It was hard to walk far on the slippery, slushy trails. Leeches loved the conditions and my ankles were covered with bites at the end of the week. I think that the greenhouse-like conditions were initially a little overwhelming to my friends who had just arrived in Malaysia from a cold northern winter.
The boat trip up/down the Tembeling River was fairly quiet this year. We did see a number of raptors but no hornbills and few other birds. Still, the trip is a lovely one and is far more scenic than the drive to Kuala Tahan. Raptor sightings included Blyth's Hawk-Eagles, Changeable Hawk-Eagles and Crested Serpent Eagles. Kingfishers were scarce perhaps because of the muddy waters.
Boat trip from Kuala Tembeling to Kuala Tahan.

We visited Lata Berkoh once. The boat trip up the Tahan River is always beautiful. This year, the lower portion of the Tahan River was muddy and water levels were high. Up at Lata Berkoh, the water was clear and stained with tannins.

I was happy to see Koh-I-Noor (Amathuxidia amythaon dilucida) this year, a new species to me. One fed on fallen star-fruits (carambola) near our chalet and another was attacted to my "melting" banana bait.

Great Saturn (Zeuxidia aurelius). The best area for this species was deep in the forest near Lata Berkoh where several were encountered. Most of the upper wings appeared to be a lovely sky blue. A tiny bit of colour can be seen in through a hole in the wing.

I often walked the 3km from the Mutiara Resort to Tabing Hide. Although not far, it was a slow walk due to several deep gullies that must be traversed. By the time that I reached the hide, my shirt would be wet with perspiration. I always would cross the creek below the hide, then walk upstream for a 100m or so where I would go for a swim. It was always so nice with clear, cool water and a feeling of being far from civilization. I never saw anyone in the area.
Once while I cooled down down in the creek, I saw a large butterfly with what appeared to be white upperwings approaching.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/moloch05/Malaysia/Taman%20Negara/Mar2012/GloriousBeganhabita.jpg
It settled nearby on a sunny branch and I was thrilled when I realized its identity ... a Glorious Begum (Agatasa calydonia)!
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/moloch05/Malaysia/Taman%20Negara/Mar2012/GloriousBegan2.jpg
Swimming seemed to be a good way to find things. A Moustached Hawk-Cuckoo flew down to sapling next to me while I floated in the water. This was a lifer and I was able to watch it for awhile before a pair of Black-naped Monarchs chased it from view.
These fruits were numerous on the trail near the final concrete bridge before Tabing Hide. A number of butterflies fed from them including various archdukes, marquis, Malayan Owls and other satyrinae.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/moloch05/Malaysia/Taman%20Negara/Mar2012/BlueBegunFruit.jpg
One sunny morning while heading to Tabing Hide, I stopped upslope and scanned the trail to see what might be on the ground. I saw the usuals but the spotted this incredible butterfly, a Blue Begum (Prothoe franck)! This species was high on my wish list so I was very happen to encounter it. What a gorgeous butterfly with its unusal greens, blues and violets. I was able to move within 2m of it but its head was usually obscured by the fruit. It flew and quickly disappeared from sight when I attempted to move around it on the trail.

Post 11.
You actually have all 3 Zeuxidia species. Of the 3 look-alikes.
First two are Z. doubledayii. (basal stripes poorly-defined; ocelli no wider than width of tornal lobe.)
The last is Z. amethystus. (basal stripes well-defined; ocelli larger, wider than tornal lobe.)
Post 14.
The blue baron is Tanaecia godartii.(Inner margin of forewing blue band straight; hindwing band tapers upwards sharply.)
Typically this species present with a very straight inner blue border at rest.
The baron is Euthalia alpheda yamuna.(Pale forewingtip; hindwing submarginal spots broadly lunulate.)
Chersonesia rahria is correct.

Neptis leucoporos. (Abdomen white-banded; shape & arrangement of 4 postdiscal spots.)

By far, the most abundant animal along the trails was the following. I made friends with many of these. My socks were always dripping with blood at the end of the day.

Thanks, Lc. I think that Taman Negara is a top place for the lowland species. It is busy at the resort but I rarely see anyone on the trails once I wander a few kms into the forest.
