An unusual looking Mycalesis with very thick black borders on the underside. just a quick shot in the dark forest interior under the quickly darkening sky before it rained.

Aberrant M. fusca?

Looks like an aberration. None of the other associated species has that dark submarginal border. You're pretty good at spotting these aberrations in the field! :cheers:

actually it landed infront of me. but because the sky was so severely overcast and the forest was so dark, it appeared as a dark brown blob with no details. only after one shot then i realized it was different.

It is so distinctive & different, it could spawn a colony of a new subspecies.

perhaps! maybe we'll see some with intermediate borders around there

i seldom come across M. fusca in the field. I don't have luck with this species. but that day was particularly lucky :)

The fruiting melastoma attracted quite a number of butterflies, including many M. fusca.

Out of which, one was aberrated, just like the previous one i shot. This one i believe is a female.

They both look distinctive enough to be a new species.

However, I think both are females.

The male usually have a more even orange-brown colour & straighter forewing margin (termen).eg.

How I wish it is a new species. But I think it's just a variation. The blak margin phenotype probably exists in bigger numbers at sime forest since I've encountered two in less than a week.

But if it was a new sp,then mycalesis melanomarginatus would be a nice and fitting name
