I get Les proposal and I start a new thread about our wonderful trip.:thumbsup:
I will post some common butterflies too, just to give a better idea of the environment and the different species from Center Thailand.
Of course some mistake will be welcome to be correct... :embrass:
For (my) convenience, I'll post the pics in chronological order:

Thanks, Antonio.
A couple of changes- The Euthalia evelina is ssp. compta, I suspect.
The Euthalia teuta ssp. is difficult to determine for certain, as the males are indistinguishable to me, the differences in females are more obvious, but yours is a male. I suspect you are right.
My mistake, I think, whilst up on the mountain (1000m) on the first day. The species looks like Parantica melaneus (Chocolate Tiger), the same as lower down. Sorry!
LD 12 - Euthalia recta monilis (Red-spot Marquis) - male & female

No.5 is Discophora sondaica zal, the northern ssp. Paler than the ssp. further south.
I am exceptionally envious of your photo of Odina decorata (Zigzag flat). No ssp. This is yet again another species found further south than previously recorded, to my knowledge.
I am totally pissed off that I missed the Kallima. Never seen the species.
I think we all managed the photo of The Tawny Angle, despite asking whether it was a moth!!!!

:what: Thank you all for sharing. I also want to meet these butts especially Kalima limborgi, but again I might just missed it because of its leaf-like appearance. I am really curious about the wingspan of Kalima. Is it comparable to Doleschallia bisaltide pratipa (Autumn Leaf)? :embrass:

cj, Kallima sps. are larger than the Autumn Leaf.
Lets get rid of my ufos early, so we can end on a high!
Hesperiidae:
LD14) Very small skipper. Spots look odd to me. Sorry, never allowed me an underside shot, though for a fleeting moment I did see it and it was unmarked.
LD15) Slightly larger skipper. Again, the location of the spots seem strange. No underside shot again.
LD16) Could this be Celaenorrhinus aurivittatus? It looks fifferent from the recently seperated C. cameroni I regularly come across in Samui.
LD17) The only Potanthus sp. I saw all trip!

LD 14 Suada swerga : subapical one big one small; discal spots likewise ; pale mark in space 1b; bodyshape & wingshape.
I think you have the size wrong here since appearance indicates moderate size.
LD 15. The series of FW submarginal spots indicates it is Halpe.. Blur has cause the spots to look large.
The 2 closest matches, H. hauxwelli & porus have whitsh spots. Perhaps afternoon sun cause colour imbalance.
Probably closer to H. hauxwelli.
Correction: H. hauxwelli have larger yellowish spots, so this should be H. hauxwelli.

H. porus.
http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6082/6158773207_57d330e7f8_z.jpg
LD 16. This looks like C. cameroni.;band more orange, lower end more rounded & reached to tornal angle.
http://yutaka.it-n.jp/hes/90550010.html
C. aurivittatus. band paler , narrower(?always narrow at costa); lower end smaller, sharper & ends slightly higher up from tornus.
http://yutaka.it-n.jp/hes/90550001.html
LD17. Potanthus juno. Upperside 2 subapical spots ;spot 5 1/2 that of spot 4.(like P. serina).
Note on the underside, all 3 subapical spots are present.

If it is Suada swega, then it was a very small specimen, it was considerably smaller than the Halpe. I had looked at that species but discounted it owing to the underside forewing apical area not being lightened. I showed the wrong photo, sorry. Here is another with more of the underside. Antonio, post19, No. A24 is Appias indra thronion (Plain Puffin).
A25's English name is Spotted Zebra. That was my mistake during the trip. (What I called the Common Zebra is actually the Lesser Zebra- the one that has paler bases on the underside hindwings).

So the male S. swerga is a bit smaller than H. hauxwelli.

Now for the Lycaenidae (non-Arhopala):
LD14) A small Theclini. I do not know if, without the full tail it can be identified. Smaller than a Common Tit, I thought, at first it was a Narrow Spark, but there is too much orange around the forewing apex. - Sinthusa nasaka amba.
LD15)Sorry about the the shading, only shot I managed, no upper side which would have determined matters. I can not decide if this Loxura atymnus fuconius or L. cassiopeia. It is definitely not what I normally find on Samui. I suspect the latter. - Loxura cassiopeia.
The puddling Polyommatiinae were very difficult, and I think that only I bothered. Most were Acytoplepis lambi, which I ignored, but I managed to find in the melee some different ones:
LD16) Think this is Celastrina lavendularis isabella, but would appreciate confirmation. - Confirmed.
LD17) Probably you will not be able to id this from upperside only. It took off after this photo, and I lost track of it in the mass of blues flying around when trying to get an underside! - Celatoxia marginata splendens.
LD18) Is this Petrelea dana? Never seen that species before. -Confirmed.
LD19) Sun in wrong position, but hopefully enough can be seen to provide an id. - Celastrina lavendularis isabella.

LD14 This matches the female Sinthusa nasaka very well.
LD 15 Loxura cassiopeia male. Male harder to see ID mark, dot of postdiscal band in space 4 is close to submarginal spot; HW heavily-marked.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e5/LoxuraCassiopeiaAmaticaMFUpUnAC1.jpg/640px-LoxuraCassiopeiaAmaticaMFUpUnAC1.jpg
LD 16. Celastrina lavendularis. darker ground ; correction note 2 spots at HW dorsum(lower margin) discount some (not all) Udara.
LD 17 This matched Celatoxia marginata. Malayan ssp splendens have reduced black border than example below. See C&P4.

Thank you so much! I am so pleased I took time to look at those puddling blues. 3 new ones for me!
Only a few (3, I think) Arhopala left of the unidentified ones (for tomorrow), though I do have a few others left to post as well but I know those.
PS. Oops, sorry, Seow, but are 16 & 19 the same species? They look different, No. 19 has a cleaner ground colour and the marginal spots are larger, the other spots are darker.

Yes. They are the same. The size of the marginal spots varies. LD16 is very worn.
C. lavendularis is a common species so there are lots of images on the net.
Correction: The 2 spots on the HW dorsum only discount some of the Udara not all.
Here is one from India which matches LD 16 well.(ssp limbata differs on the topside with broad borders.)

For those who are wondering who the gentleman is, he is Dr. Ian Redmond, a well known British conservationist and regularly appears on TV. He, with a number of other conservationists were taking a week-end off from the CITES convention which was going on in Bangkok at the time we were in KK.
He asked me to do a talk-over of a film he was making of the puddling butts decribing what was happening. Needless to say I made a right mess of it!

1 should be A. silhetensis. There are examples with broader spot 6 & 7. (see C&P4 plate 67.)
All examples of A. cleander have the inner margins of HW spot 6 & 7 in line.

2 is likely A. eumolphus ( A. horsfieldi cannot be discounted).
HW spot 6 very broad with outer notch; spot 7 on top; postdiscal band partially dislocated at V2; FW spot 4 shifted out; costal spot 10.
3 is likely A. atosia. HW spot 5, 6 & 7 in echelon;

The Hasora should be H. malayana.
In comparing Yutaka images of the 2 species, the only real difference is.
H. taminatus. HW band becomes diffuse, vague, or streaked out upwards.

A63 This looks to be Suada albolineata.
The subspecies of Suada swerga here, ie ssp suava ,has a very large white or buff(pale yellowish) area on the hindwing.
I have checked de Niceville's original description & he did not mention the veins being white.
However. nominate ssp swerga from India has less white/buff & some veins are whitened/pale.

Suada albolineata does not have the hindwing shaded with white/buff, only the veins are streaky white/buff.
The name albolineata (white-lined) refers to the white veins.

FW apex broadly rounded; discal blue spots; marginal dots; HW spots rounded.

Spots on the HW may be poorly defined (as here) ; basal spot in space 7 large; abdomen with broad prominent black bands.

Similar to Indian T. honorei, but this has small basal spot 7, & abdomen not strongly black-banded.

antonio once again,
fabulous pictures. your pictures are sort of environmental with great clarity and composition. they are like "book photos". i strive to shoot pictures like these one day. it's a breath of fresh air compared to the usual brightly lit green backgrounds and i really really like it.
Thank you MinuteMaid, for the kind and flattering words.
hope to do better here in KPG, because in Kaeng Krachan was more a "documentation Photography".

Post 62.
1. Graphium mecareus burmensis.
Yutaka's actually illustrate ssp. indochinensis from KK, so both subspecies appeared to be present there.
2. Caltoris species ? confusa.
Upper cell spot small (ie 2 cellspots); subapical spots small; dark brown underside without purple or red tint.
Called Dark Swift perhaps a confusion with C. cahira which is also known as Dark Swift (or Colon Swift.)
Unfortunately, Boldsystem shows C. confusa without any cell spot.
3. Neptis miah nolana. Note large rectangular postdiscal spot.
4. Catochrysops panormus exiguus.
5 & 6. Both appeared to C. bernardus. The same confusing 2 forms occur on Fraser's Hill.

Nice Neptis miah nolana, mine has a large part of the forwing apex missing:cry:!
I had thought I had finished, but I realise that there is one last one where I am not positive about the id.
I THINK this is Euthalia eriphylae chula (female), but the single white apical spot concerns me, I can not find any picture of this ssp. with that spot.

I think it is an aberrant form of the female of Tanaecia julii odilina.
The hindwing postdiscal 'band' is composed of lunulate lines, whereas in the females of E. eriphylae & aconthea they are diffuse spots.
This is characteristic of Tanaecia.
The forewing potdiscal spots in spaces 1b, 2, & 3 are lightly whitened & they are placed inwards (at an acute angle) from the spots above.
In E. eriphylae these spots are placed further out at a wide angle (somewhat in a slant) from the above spots.
The extra subapical white spot is a breakdown of the normally large spot in space 6.

Points noted, thank you. T. julii males were very commonly seen there.
As this will be my last post on this thread, may I say how much I enjoyed meeting up with Ellen, Nelson, LC and Antonio, again. It was also a great pleasure to meet Yano one day, who kindly provided us with the location of an additional forest path to explore.

Thank you for the identification. Really did not imagine both to be C. bernardus. They look very different.
I also enjoyed the trip a lot. Loved the company especially. Many a joke was shared at the dinner table. :)
I have to get down to writing an entry for it. But so much to write about. Don't know where to start!
See you all this Friday....
