maybe more importantly, where did they bring us to... some of the places are not marked out on the map, for example the canel behind the fenced up area.

Post 18.

The swift is not Pelopidas mathias, but appeared to be P. assamenssis.

Noted Features.
Dark grey body hairs.
FW with 2 subapical spots.
HW without cell-spot , a spot in space 3 & a tiny one in space 4.
Antennae with faint paleness below the clubs.

The Great Swift have a very variable nos. of spots; HW cellspot may be absent & other spots reduced in number.
It is however much larger than the Small Branded Swift.
An example with a single spot on the HW & no cell spot; FW with 2 subapical spots.

Yes I think that might be the problem , metering and flash , I switched to the 1D3 after the 1D4 and flash was having some problem.

After taking a second look at these two by Billy, I am more inclined to ID them as Gram Blue rather than Cycad Blue. What do you think? :) As they were shot in an upside down pose, first looks were a bit deceiving. I've rotated them for easier comparison.

Actually The Cycad Blue also( usually ) have a black dot on the inner margin. (I happened to be looking at one which does not have one.)

The most reliable feature is that in the Cycad Blue, the postdiscal spot 7 (black) is right on top of spot 6(grey).
In the Gram Blue the two spots are well apart; also the Gram Blue has more complete double orange rings.

This post is probably going to make everyone laugh!
Thought I have nailed a Eurema hecabe contubernalis (Common Grass Yellow)...but after going thru the checklist, I'm not sure if it is this or Eurema blanda snelleni (Three Spot Grass Yellow). :confused:21065

Experienced a lot of over-exposed shots recently. Is there such things as my flash canon 600 Ex-Rt is too powerful for my 650d? When I set ISO to 100 or 200, sometimes I get very slow shutter of 1/40 or 1/80. This results in blurred images. To overcome it, I increase ISO to 400 and very often the result is over-eposure. My flash is set to ETTL. Should I switch back to 270EX?

Psyche
25-May-2013, 12:04 AM
You have Eurema hecabe. The FW cell is exposed enough to show the 3rd spot if present.
The upperside black border of E. blanda tends to be narrow & less angular.

My flash is set to ETTL. Should I switch back to 270EX?

You have Eurema hecabe. The FW cell is exposed enough to show the 3rd spot if present.
The upperside black border of E. blanda tends to be narrow & less angular.

Thank you very much, Dr Seow.

Haha, Thks Loke. I was there this morning for breakfast with my wife and can't resists to shoot for a while. All shots were taken with S150 (without TC) except the first 2 shots in my last post. I'm beginning to understand this lens better but still got a lot to learn :P

Nelson, I've got the TC too. Some of my shots in the Ipoh trip were shot with the TC on, eg the Blue leaf blue, dragontail...

i have seen Rustic also along changi coast road where Nparks planted some flacourtia beside the road.

I hope the Vagrant is not a one off individual that came with some plants. but would be cool if there was a small population at GBTB.

A great find:thumbsup::thumbsup:.

I suspected this strong flying species might one day be seen again and so it did.

Many authorities now consider the western population from India to Sundaland to be Vagrans sinha, separated from the Papuan V. egista, so the taxon here would be Vagrans sinha macromalayana.

( Note: sinha, Sanskrit, same as singha ie. lion; type location Kashmir. )

TL Seow:cheers:
PS. The Yutaka website reduce ssp. macromalayana as a synonym of sinha, ie. V. sinha sinha extends all the way from India to the philippines.

Congratulations on the wonderful find.

I wonder if the specimen is simply living up to its name and is a one-off, I hope not. With the planting of its hostplant in the area, it would be great for Singapore to get a breeding population.

Congrats, Cher Hern! Not only a +1 for you, but I would add it as a +1 for the Singapore Checklist, with thanks to our newbie Billy Oh for spotting it first. It's a re-discovery cos it was on the early authors' checklist for Singapore. A butt of this pristine condition cannot have just migrated on its own steam. It probably hitchhiked on the Flacourtia plants that GB brought in from overseas. Let's hope that we see more of them, and that they are breeding on those Flacourtia trees. :redbounce

The subspecies macromalayana of Vagrans sinha is now a synonym of subspecies sinha.
Formerly ssp macromalayana covers Sundaland (ie. greater Malaya/Malaysia, old zoogeographical term) and the Philippines.

As with a strongly migratory species it is often impossible to differentiate between continental & insular forms.
Vagrans sinha sinha now extends from India to the philippines.
Yutaka website shows the distribution of V. sinha sinha.
http://yutaka.it-n.jp/hel/710140010.html

The Philippine websites only list V. sinha sinha. for example.

Vagrans egista macromalayana has became synonym

Vagrans sinha sinha is the current name

We cannot catch up with them naming and renaming these butts can we !!??:bsmile:

Pisuth has also named it Vagrans sinha sinha in his latest edition of Butterflies of Thailand .

Haha... Dr Seow's references come from more recent research papers that point to the likelihood that the Singapore/Malaysia species is closer to the western population. Our two reference books for the region, C&P4 and Fleming both used the older name egista. When Col Eliot updated the recent developments in the MNJ in Oct 2006, there was still no change to the species from egista to sinha.

Perhaps Dr Seow can look for the paper that indicates the change of status so that we can be clearer on which to use.

Nomenclatural changes such as this is a matter of acceptance by peer groups and it can be difficult to find the source. (I think it is Ikeda 2000.)
For example, Eliot in the same MNJ 2006 upgraded Ixias pyrene alticola to I. alticola which few had heard of.
He also make changes to Ragadia which remains largely unknown.
On page 35 he referred to the Orange Awlet as Bibasis harisa so I am curious as to when did BC adopted Burara.
In C&P4, the tentative name,Ypthima horsfieldi humei is unaccepted outside Malaysia.

Practically all the surrounding areas here referred to the Vagrant as Vagrans sinha, but I see the Indian website still use V. egista sinha.
This respected website referred to the Sulawesi representative as Vagrans sinha nupta. (V. egista occurs from Maluku eastwards.)

There is no compulsion to use the new nomenclature of course.
Many websites still refer to the older name.

In their treatise on the Butterflies of Sulawesi, 2003, Vane-wright & de Jong stated it was Tsukada 1985 who first proposed the separation of taxa egista & sinha as two species even though they are allopatric ie. their distributions do not overlap.

This course of action was followed by Treadaway 1995, and which they have also adopted.

TL Seow:cheers:
PS. Tsukada's revision is probably in Butterflies of the South East Asian Islands.

Yes indeed. But at least in butterfly taxonomy, the changes don't come as fast and furious as in botany. Quite a lot of the plant names in C&P4 and Fleming have been revised and oftentimes, it sent me on a wild goose chase looking for names that no longer exist.

How I wish that there is a single body that collates all these scientific studies in a comprehensive repository. I suppose there isn't anyone in Malaysia doing research and publishing papers as prolifically as the Indians and Japs. MNJ 2006 also changed the genus name for Paduca if I'm not mistaken.

Actually, it could be a possible task for BC to collate these papers and use our website or blog as a repository of any research papers that come to our attention. At least for those species relevant to our region.

I also don't recall the discussion on Burara. I think Les pointed us to various recent sources, but I can't be sure. :hmmm:

Many revisions are done in regional journals not available to the public, & not found on the web eg the revision by Eliot in MNJ.
Also many taxonomists may not agree with the revised findings.

Paduca is replaced by Algia, an earler name (dug out in some regional journal) which has priority.

Burara was ressurected by Vane-wright & de Jong as a new genus different from the sena species-group.
(Surprisingly, the other in the sena group (Bibasis) , iluska & mahintha have rounded HW & look like Burara.)

I sensed a confusion among readers as to how the name changes of Vagrans comes about.

Various forms of Vagrans were named from India to the Pacific islands.
eg taxon (taxonomic name) sinha 1844 from India, taxon macrmalayana 1912 (Malaya) ,taxon egista 1786 (Ambon), etc.

They were considered to be forms of a single species & as egista is the oldest name, the species is Vagrans egista, type location Ambon.
Ambon thus have the nominate ssp. V. egista egista.
India have V. egista sinha.
Malaya (including all of Sundaland & south Philippines) V. egista macromalayana.

Tsukada in his revision in 1985 considered the western forms to be a separate species.
As sinha is the oldest name the western population becomes Vagrans sinha, ie. Vagrans egista sinha becomes V. sinha sinha in continental Asia.
As there is very little difference between forms of sinha & macromalayana, the taxon macromalayana is dropped as a subspecies & becomes a synonym of sinha.
This course of action was followed by Treadaway1995 (ssp brixia also dropped) , Vane-wright & de Jong2003,& Smetacek.
(note Peter Smetacek have included a ssp pallida which he considered distinctive.)
Thus Vagrans sinha sinha 's range extends from India to the Philippines.

The eastern forms from Maluku to the Pacific islands remain as V. egista.
They have rounded wings, stubby tails, & are much less heavily marked.

My understanding is that Bibasis and Burara are seperated by the shape of the male genitalia, especially the aedeagus, which is short and stout in Bibasis whilst long, thin and curved in Burara. Also, Burara species have a small black basal spot on the hindwing underside (Pinratana 1985). Whether these are sufficient to split the two is a matter of opinion.
