Federick,
Wow, you have so many amazing butterflies! I don't recall seeing photos of many of these. The photos are fantastic.
Was the Indian Purple Emperor hard to approach?
Those jezebels were fantastic! Les must have been ecstatic to see these.
I look forward to many more photos from the trip.

The Indian Purple Emperor was rather common there. So it was not too difficult to find one which was "drunk" on the ground.

The weather was generally good when we were at Chiang Dao. Perhaps it was not the right time to look for montane species.

re CD30, if it is the one I saw a part of the upperside, and I think it is, it is a Pithauria species, I think P. stramineipennis stramineipennis. It was partially whitish, basally, and I think you can just see the start of the forewing costal part in the photo. It matches my photos of that species very well.
It was also much larger than the average Halpe!
PS. Sorry I have not shown anything yet, still processing!!!!

CD27 ID Correction.
Udara rona catius.
Monodontides can be discounted because it has a spot near the base of space 1b (where twin spot are.)
The 2 Udara species with lunulate submarginals & in which HW postdiscal spot 7 is not much larger nor darker than many of the others are U. dilecta & rona.
U. dilecta tends to be whiter & the spots often reduced.

Any reason why Celastrina argiolus iynteana is not considered?
I have to admit you have a good point here.
When I first check thru argiolus all the valid images were from Europe or USA.
They have the submarginal lunulate markins obsolete or very poorly defined, & a white ground colour.
However, I have check up ssp lynteana & it does have submarginal lunules. Fig. 1o below.
http://www.archive.org/stream/proceedingsofgen83zool#page/n663/mode/1up
Undeniably the spots/markings could match dllecta, rona or argiolus.
CD27 have a strong dingy brown underside.
I have not seen any example of C argiolus with this colour.
Still, given the wide variaton possible in any of these species, the ID is still dodgy.
Perhaps, I was too intent on separating dilecta & rona.
C. argiolus is still in the picture, but I would love to see a valid pic of it with this dingy underside first.

Great shots from everyone but don't seem to see LC Goh's shots as yet, still PS'ing :)

Stunning shots! The Kallima inachus siamensis was so beautiful. Nice to see the variety of Charaxes, Les. Was Charaxes aristogiton a new one for you? Charaxes is certainly a diverse genus. I would love to try for some of the African species someday.

Post 46.
LD16 topside male f- hierax is right. HW with large black submarginal spots. Another f-corax have the spots small.
Underside . Uncertain if this is f-hierax .(It is if f-corax is absent.) Link shows f-hierax with some highlighted spots.
LD17 topside male f-hipponax is right .FW white band without white marginal spots.
Underside. f-pleistoanax. Topside with white spots & underside with white band. (Band in f-hipponax is ochreous.)
LD 18, 19 ,20 are forms of C. aristogiton. FW with breakaway tawny margin & separated spots in hte subapical area.
LD18 is easily confused witn C. harmodius which have the black border scalloped.

THe forms of C. bernardus hierax. ( Underside of f-corax is not shown.)

Thank you very much indeed.
I am not aware that f. corvus has yet been recorded from Thailand, I will keep the underside as f. hierax for now.
Regarding f. pleistoanax, I had noticed the white spots and wondered, but I only got good upperside views of f. hipponax, assumed that it was that. Being as they are, there is one more underside, which I had disregarded as I thought the yellowish band was caused by the sun. Is this f. hipponax underside?
I see you have amended the id for an earlier posting, I was going to ask about that.

David, both C. bernardus hierax and C. aristogiton were seen during a recent trip to Petchabun, but my photos, then, were not suitable for id purposes, so, one can say, yes, new to me, in so far as I can now add them to my site.

The pic. looks good for f-hipponax.
Post 27 looks good for f-pleistoanax, with the messy pale band.
Not absolutely certain of course.

LD25) Miletus sp. (smallish)
LD21. This looks good for U.placidura howarthi.
This has HW spot 7 larger & darker than the others. (the darkness is not so obvious here.)
The ground colour is dingier than dilecta (& rona) and the spots are faintly outlined in white.
If you recall, CD27 is very similar but spot 7 is small & the spots are hardly lined wth white.
http://www.lycaenidae.gmxhome.de/Lycaenopsis/Udara/Udara-index.htm
LD23. Nacaduba berenice. Fairly typical.
LD24. Celatoxia marginata.
There is a bluish white patch on the HW as well which effectively discount most species.
The name 'marginata' refers to the strongly marked HW margin.
LD25.Female Miletus ancon.
The dark spots forms a loop, like a question-mark.

I have been to Doi Chiang Dao, but seen very little in comparison to this exciting trip, probably I was not at the right time and/or I went the wrong places.
What is the very best season to visit? What months should certainly be avoided?
What areas did you visit? I was mainly there for birds the fist time, but if/when I go back the butterflies (and moths) will take first attention spot. I went to Temple Area, Den Ya Kat Substation and a bit on the road through the national park - but not far as I did not have my own transport. Can you give some advice about the best areas to go for butterflies?
best wishes
