The gang is back from Langkawi. Whilst the weather was quite cooperative with hot sunshine and humid days, butterfly activity was not too high. Nevertheless, it was a good outing with good food, beer, company and the butts of course. We also met up with Gary Ruben, one of the local experts who shared some interesting locations with us. Sunny can post his super rare butt. :grin2:.
Here are a couple of processed shots to start the ball rolling... At least the S180 is more well behaved this time. :)

I do not why it it happens, but this is normal for me. On this thread, so far, I can see only one photo, the Sarangesa! I suspect that, tomorrow, I will not be able to see that!
To see photos I have to go to 'reply' then 'advanced reply' and then work down to the orignal post where I can see the photo attachments, and then have to click on the attachment. I believe that when anyone uses the 'Insert online' button, I will not see the photo.
This has been happening ever since the site changed.

Baron (Euthalia aconthea verena?)
I am confused by this name. Ssp. verena belongs to sp. Euthalia alpheda, but even then it is not found in Sundaland, only as far south as Kaeng Krachan.
The ssp. of E. alpheda found on Langkawi is E. a. langkawica. There is also another subspecies found in southern Thailand and Koh Tarutao, E. alpheda yamuna. Could these two be synonymous, as Yutaka says that the latter is also found in Malaysia?
Lovely shots everyone. It was nice to see Herona marathus angustata again, I have not seen it on Samui for 3-4 years!

19-Nov-2013, 09:44 AM
Sorry Les. My mistake. It should be E. aconthea gurda after all. I was looking at E. alpheda verena in Pisuth's book, but that one is slightly different subapical spots from what I posted here. So it's the common Baron after all.
What about E. merta? Or is it something else? E. eriphylae?

Arhopala lurida.
There is no match if FW spot 4 is considered to be in line with spots 5, 6, & 9 above it.
Particularly in lurida, spot 4 is only slightly shifted out. ( Needs a good perpendicular shot.)
HW spots 4 & 5 are in line or slightly out. (strongly out of line/dislocated in A. atosia.)
Spots tend to larger , rounder & better contrasted than in atosia.

Thanks to Dr. Seow for highlighting the error in C&P 4. :)
This is really Cyrestis cocles earli, form formosa.
C&P4 plate 23 No. 5 & 6 labels have been transposed.
No. 5 is form earli.
No. 6 is form formosa.
(Note: formosa = beautiful form & this is obviously the pretty one.)

Excellent photos, guys!
Gary and Audrey certainly have an impressive collection of butterflies. For many of them, that is about the only way to have a good look at the upper wings.

Post 41.
The Tiger is Ideopsis similis persimilis.
The FW spots in space 2 & 3 are rounder. The FW cellend spot lacks the upper streak seen in I. vulgaris.
In profile shot a very useful ID feature is the width of the brown stripe of vein 1b at the inner margin.
It is narrow, leaving a broad white stripe in space 1a adjacent to it.
In vulgaris the brown vein 1b stripe is as wide as the white stripe of space 1a.
The brown stripe of vein 1a is fairly narrow in both spp.
I. vulgaris for comparison.

In other regions the brown stripe of vein 1b in similis can be broader.
Ideopsis similis is larger and a clearer blue than I. vulgaris.
It is called the Blue Glassy Tiger in India & is certainly more deserving of this name.
It has made its way as far south as Selangor (for over a decade) & is probably in Johore by now.

PS. Quite surprising how these are ID'ed as I. simils.
