Wonderful Thaduka multicaudata!!

Hi Dr Seow,
Greatly appreciate for the ID of all the butts.
Dr Lee who brought us along did mentioned that the J. Celeno is a DSF. The shots between the 2 Heliophorus ila nolus might not be the same (i cannot recall if it is the same specimen flying around as there were a couple in the same area), but the one with the open wing has the absence of the orange. Pretty glad I manage to capture it.
Cheers!

Brian,
The trip itself was really good. After a long tiring year i really could use the break and it is really nice up in the mountains, worth every minute of my time over there.

Aaron / Antonio,
Everyone on the trip was very exited about the T. multicaudata and S. daraxa daraxa. Too bad the T. multicudata was hiding in some low grass before zipping up into the tree lines. The S. daraxa on the other hand had half of its left hind wing missing, had to do some magic in photoshop to patch the poor bugger up.
I do miss the place already, it is really relaxing and the butterflies are amazing over there, not to mention the wonderful food. Would really like to go back in the future during the hotter season to find more butterflies.
Federick,
Thanks for the kind words. We went during the cold season, the activity was really quite low. The HKLS guys showed me their Chiang Dao video on puddling butterflies they took during the hot season, the place was literally covered in butts and it was quite impossible to maneuver around to shoot the more "uncommon" species amongst the crowd.
Cheers,
Mark

Notocrypta feisthamelii.
FW with subapical spots & band reaching costal margin.
Post 4 No.1 I will leave it as Heliophorus ila. It matches the Taiwan H.ila well (no epicles there)
Ellen's pic. The black dots & white dashes may be important differentiating clues.
http://wanderingbutterflyeffect.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/e7b4abe697a5e781b0e89db6-e7b485e9828ae9bb83e5b08fe781b0e89db6-heliophorus-ila-matsumurae-restricted-purple-sapphire-2.jpg
H. epicles.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5c/Heliophorus_epicles.jpg
Confirmed H. ila ]. Underside of H. epicles 'clean ' with hardly any black spots or the HW white dashes.
An educated guess for the Ypthima is Y. baldus baldus dsf.
All the Potanthus appeared to be of one species.
Veins lightly darkened ; FW spots 3 & 4 overlap, while 5 & 6 do not.
Very likely the Common Dart Potanthus pseudomaesa.[/I

TL Seow
PS. Heliophorus ila malaya actually have a very clean golden ground colour, so the ID difference only works in the north.

Lovely series Mark. I hope to be up there again in the not too distant future, once I am better.
Seow, did you consider Heliophorus indicus in your thought processes for the Sapphire? It is found in the area.

Heliophorus indicus in your thought processes for the Sapphire? It is found in the area.
I did but dismissed it on seeing this pic. below.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iKwcnE2h9s8/UoeFRqCm1vI/AAAAAAAAMi0/RzuvtlDw7yQ/s1600/HFH8816%2BHeliophorus%2Bila%2Bnolus%2B(The%2BIndia n%2BPurple%2BSapphire).jpg
But you are absolutely right. It is Heliophorus indicus all along.
There are examples where the the pale shading on the HW crimson border is not so obvious.
The examples below are very good matches.
http://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/media_images/HeliophorusIndicus/HeliophorusIndicus_SanjaySondhi_ar532.jpg
http://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/media_images/HeliophorusIndicus/HeliophorusIndicus_SanjaySondhi_ar531.jpg
That Taiwanese H. ila matsumurae also threw me off-track.
I ended up trying too hard to separate it as ila or epicles.
Even after confirming it as H. ila I have an unease because the H. ila here is quite different.
Your comments indicate you are unwell. (which explains your long absence.)
Get well soon &

Very nice, Mark. You found lots in the cool season so it must really be incredibly when conditions are warmer.

Hi David, yes, the Chiang Dao region was surprisingly productive. There should be tonnes of butts during the warmer seasons.
