Three recent images from Tat Mok NP, nc Thailand. Image 2 and 3 match my other images of Halpe zola from various places around Thailand (where this species is relatively common). However, the first image appears to be H. elana?
Several features that differ from zola I note are:

1. Much narrower band on hindwing.
2. Inner edge of narrow band very straight and not jagged like H. zola.
3. Pale edges to outer margins of forewing smudged and continuous. (In zola these always appear to be more individual spots.).
4. Banding on abdomen much less pronounced.

Many thanks

The band is too wide to be H. elana.
It is probably H. zema or zola

H. elana.

The great difficulty is between H. zola & zema.

H. zema Malaya, central part. H. zola is not recorded from Malaya.

I have'nt quite figure out the difference as images on the net are very confusing.

Many thanks. Yes, I agree images on the web just confuse things!

Yutaka have provided images of all Halpe species on his website since August this year.

It is still impossible to separate by markings, but H. zema is lighter, more chestnut brown while H. zola is a darker bitter chocolate colour.
