I went for a short trip to Chiangmai, 7-12 Oct 2019, with sifu Khew, Cheng Ai and Jonathan. It was a short but fruitful trip, 4 full days of butt hunting/shooting. It was the first Chiangmai butterfly trip for Cheng Ai, Jonathan and I, and there, we met up with Antonio and his lovely wife, Kai.
I will be posting photos of the butterflies that I shot at Chiangmai and Chiangdao...trying my best to ID them, appreciate inputs and corrections if there is/are any...
I will start of with Hesperiidae, Hesperiinae, interestingly, the speicies there are much nicer than those that are found in Singapore.
Ochus subvittatus (Tiger Hopper)
This tiny one was the first hesperiidae that caught my attention, with a wingspan of only 22mm (if I'm not wrong).

Post 5.
There are about 20 species of Potanthus species in Thailand & their IDs can be very difficult from fieldshots.
Potanthus no. 1; Male on the left ,female on the right.
Male abdominal end not black-banded ,FW spots overlapping HW spot 6 absent; Female FW spots no overlap between spot 5 & 6; HW spot 6 present.
Underside dark shaded.
Three species have the abdominal end yellow without a black band. namely P. omaha, ganda & confucius.
P. omaha ;HW band the veins dark-dusted, shading light.
http://www.butterflycircle.com/checklist/mugshots/Potanthus%20omaha%20omaha/272%20Potanthus%20omaha%20omaha%20(Lesser%20Dart)% 20Bobby%20Mun.jpg
P. ganda; HW band the veins not dark=dusted ;heavier dark shading.
P. ganda is normally quite oranging but it difficult to judge in fieldshots.
Male from P. Malaysia; female from Singapore.
https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r1T4ajMPuVQ/Wmfi2GgfpLI/AAAAAAAAOkY/jv666Pzc-P4hAR9LfytxbX4u--_eoqFnwCLcBGAs/s1600/Potanthus%2Bganda%2B%2528Ganda%2BDart%2529%2B%2528 6%2529.jpg

P. confuciusFW spots broadly overlapping; HW underside usually with spot 6; Band edged with definite dark spots.
Male Thailand female from Taiwan.

No. 1 should be Potanthus ganda.
You can see the the respective sexes match.
2. FW with spot barely overlap spot 3 while spot 5 is detached from spot 6. FW spot 2 & 3 wider.Abdominal end with a black band.
This should be P. pseudomaesa.

1. Celatoxia marginata.Female.
Among the genera with a white dot at the antennal tip include Celastrina, Udara ,Celatoxia, Lestranicus & Callenya.
C. lavendualris have spots with white halos, while C. argiolus have small spots.

Yes they are both Kallima inachus siamensis.
They can be quite confusing.
It is impossible to ID from the underside pattern, as it is so variable.
K. inachus; FW apex with a small pointed tip & HW tail longer.
HW tail nearly as long as the lower distal margin from vein 2 (where it is strongly angled) to the the tornus.
Upperside orange band inner border with a series of deep well-defined indentations.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kallima.inachus.2.jpg
https://www.learnaboutbutterflies.com/India%20-%20Kallima%20inachus.htm
K. limborgi FW apex in the male not produced to a tip but does so in the female.
HW tail shorter , shorter than the lower distal margin from vein 2 to tornus.
Upperside with the orange inner border irregular, without sharply defined indentations. Correction: Can also have well-defined indentations.

Limenitis was once the broad generic name used for a numer of distantly related genera. Newer classifications use Athyma because they wish to emphasise the distinctness of these two groups of taxa. So this name has now been confined to a small group of species and is used in a much narrower sense.

The following Theclinae are easy to ID so no help needed (phew!) I hope! :bsmile:
Cheritra freja evansi (Common imperial)
A moderately rare species in Singapore but seems to be quite common in Chiangmai, I encountered a couple of them each day. I prefer the subspecies frigga which is found in Singapore, with more orange shading on the forewing. Nonetheless, still a joy to see and photograph because I haven't got the chance to do so in Singapore yet.

Hypolycaena erylus himavantus (Common Tit)
A common species but still very attractive. A lot "whiter" than the subspecies teatus, the pristine ones have a beautiful slivery sheen, reflecting light at certain angle....I don't think the photos have done justice to its beauty!

A lot darker than the subspecies travana which is found in Singapore. It has a beautiful purplish hue which I don't see in travana.

I find the combination of species under the subfamily Apaturinae is very interesting, the courtesans together with the emperors, princes and courtier
Euripus nyctelius nyctelius (Courtesan)
This is another species that I haven't got a chance to see in Singapore, I believe it was a couple of years ago when someone sighted and shot one?
During our stay at Chiangmai, I encountered at least one each day. I was extra happy when 2 of them appeared on our 2nd visit to Chiangdao!

Yes, the last one is Rohana perisatis.
This & tonkiniana are very similar.
R. parisatis; FW distal margin more excavated in the male.
UnH cellend mark consist of two separated spots or upper spot obsolete; FW cellend mark is strongly constricted or separated into two as well.
This male from S. India is easier to see the cellend marks.

Post 35.
I think you got both right.
Heliophorus epicles & ila are very confusingly similar in the North.
In P. Malaysia they are much more easy to ID.
H. ila malaya. UnH red border in space 6 nearly flushed with the rest, rounded.

H. epicles tweediei.UnH red border in space 6 protrude inwards , ie further in than the rest .

The male of H. epicles usually have some orange on the FW even ssp latlimbata.

H. ila nolus in Thailand have the inner margin of the red border rounded , slightly protruding inwards.

Ypthima confusa have HW eyespot 6 much larger than spot 2.
Y. watsoni have both spot 6 & 2 about equal.
See pdf article below in link Satyridae from Vietnam. fig 7. no 4 (confusa) & 7 (watsoni.

Many thanks, Dr Seow.
As a reference, I have attached info on Y. confusa and Y. watsoni from Pisuth's book. The subspecies watsoni which is found in Chiangmai has very small ocelli on the HW, is the size vairable?

Practically all species have some variations in the size of the ocelli.
Despite what Pisuth stated, there are dsf of Y. watsoni.
Y. watsoni watsoni was described by Moore , type location Burma (Myanmar).
From Moore's book.
Fig 4 wsf.
Fig 4a, b, c, dsf male & female.

Pisuth's image looks like dsf with its small ocelli & strong fasciae (bandings).

Dr Seow, in Pisuth's book, he mentioned that 'this species has been revised and raised up from subspecies of intermedia to a species', so should it be Chersonesia rahrioides instead of Chersonesia intermedia rahrioides?

When someone does a revision & upgrade a subspecies to a full species. his argument have to be convincing to gain acceptance from his peers.
Pisuth's book was published in 2012, so the revision ( by whoever )was done earlier than that.
The major players here have retain this as a subspecies.
Yutaka webpage on C. intermedia rahriodes was revised in 31 -8- 2018 just last year.
http://yutaka.it-n.jp/cyr/730080010.html
Butterflies of India have also retain it as a subspecies.
