Its caterpillar and several others, was found feeding on a patch of Pennisetum purpureum. The others caterpillars were raised and eclosed as Telicota besta, but this is one looks unusual. It is also much smaller. It is a T.besta with an aberration on its hindwing or could it be a Cephrenes acalle?

It looks like your male specimen here has a brand on the upperside of the forewing. The Cephrenes spp. do not have a brand.

Concur here. Cephrenes do not have a male brand.

This one seem to show a mixture of features.

It is probably T. besta but could be T. bambusae species said to be common further north in SE Asia & India.

Salient points.
1 The male brand is centrally placed in the black space.
2. There is a prominent orange triangular patch at the base of space 2.
3. The underside have no noticeable veins darkening.
4. Stated to be much smaller than the others (T besta) in the batch.

T. besta.
Male brand placed nearer the inner margin of the black space than its outer margin.
Base of space 2 with an orange patch.
UnH veins may be faintly darken (variable)

T. bambusas horisha Taiwan male.
Note the triangular orange patch at the base of space 2 is well-formed, very similar to T. besta.

Small size & the centrally placed brand in the black space suggest T. bambusae but may just be a T. besta variant if the rest can be reliably IDed as T. besta...

Saving the image & zooming in shows the shape of the male brand is much as in T. besta
That & the strongly developed triangle orange patch at the base of space 2 is consistent with T. besta.

Compare.

In contrast T. bambusae bambusae, the subpecies lightly to be found here have a narrow slightkly different brand& the base of space not solidly orange.
Typical T. bambusae bambusae from Assam.

It is thus a small size T. besta.
