We have a lot of flats from Meghalaya that need your expert views for proper identification. I put my hands on their ids but most of my ids are tentative and need your confirmation.

1. C. nigricans is correct.

Key as followingt Evans.
1a, 1b, 12a, 19a ...FW ce3llspot is nearer apex than base., 19b, 19c , 21 (19d) HW cilia narrowly white or brown; FW spot 3 conjoined to band ; only outer spot in space 1b...C. nigricans.

Note this individual match key line 19a well, ie FW cellspot is nearer FW apex than base.

This is not obvious in this pix.

2. C. putra is correct.

Key 1a, 1b, 12a, 12b, 15a (12c), 17a (15b)... FW produced. dorsum (FW lower margin) = termen ( FW outer margin)........C. putra.

C. putra FW band not extend above radius.
FW produced dorsum= termen.
This gives the FW a sharper look.

Compare C. leucocera where FW is not produced ie. dorsum is greater than termen.
This the FWs are broader look.

3. Celaenorrhinus affinis.


4. Celaenorhinus aurivittata.

What have been grouped under C. dhanada are now mainly separated into good species.


C. zea;
Resenbling C. dhanada
FW upper spot in space 1b small, triangular & placed under the middle of spot 2.
HW cilia plain.



C. dhanada.
FW band irregular, the upper spot in space 1b placed under the outer edge of spot 2.
Antennal with broad yellow band ,shaft chequred .
HW cilia narrowly chequered yellow.

C. affinis. FW 20mm.
FW band irregular with a tornal spot in space 1b.
Antennal club narrowly banded yellow at base & HW cilia narrowly chequered yellow.

C. andamanicus hanna. Like affinis but much smaller FW 17mm.
FW band irregular broad in the middle & HW cilia plain ( may be vaguely chequered).

FW margins of central band regular.

5. Female C. putra putra.

The female have broader wings .
Antennae only the club white.
FW band not extending to costa.
HW cilia whitish & chequered.

6 & 7 male C. leucocera.

It can be very difficult to separate C. putra & leucocera as some C. leucocera may not have the extension of the FW band to the costa.


There is a tendency for C. leucicera to have two spots in space 1b while C. putra almost always have one spot.
There is a losser degree of overlap of the FW cellspot & spot 2 in C. leucocera giving it a more irregular look.
In C. putra the overlap is greater so these two spots are nearer & more confluent giving it a more regular band.

8. Pseudocoladenia fatua.


Three species are very similar.

P. fatih.
Western Himalayas.
FW spots are close but not tightly packed.
Spots white in both sexes.

P. fatua.
FW spots are close as in P. fatih.
Smaller & redder brown. Male FW produced, ie sharper.

P. festa;
FW sots are packed tightly, yellow in male ,whitish in female.
Generally darker & duller.

Thank you so much for such a nice review with lot of valuable information. C. affinis is very new to me. I am sure we might have come across C. andamanicus hanna but might have overlooked it for C. aurivittata. But I hope from next time I will observe them carefully in the field knowing there are so many similar looking ones.
