Is this Horaga syrinx? The hindwing band suggests so, but the strongly notched and broad white band in the forward wing cast some doubts. :hmmm:

The caterpillar and pupa stage of this specimen closely resemble those of the earlier Horaga albimacula specimen.

Male Horaga onyx sardonyx.


Four similar species.

Larger, FW 13-16mm; Foreleg tibia banded black & white, variable.

H. syrinx. FW white spot typically narrow ,outer margin often regular, less notched.often veins dark.
UnH postdiscal white band after the sharp bend falls short of crossing vein 1a.

H. onyx. FW white spot typically broad, with a strong notch/step on outer margin.
UnH postdiscal white band, after bend continue pass vein 1a to the inner margin.

Smaller FW 11-12 mm. Foreleg tibia mostly white.

H. albimacula.
UpF white patch large , outer margin often notched, but white patch does not extend below vein 2 into space 1b. Groud colour brown.
Unh white band stops at vein 1a, but with a small broken extension into the marginal space.

H. chalcedonyx. FW white patch outer margin regular typically wiyhout a notch narrower, extending below vein 2 into space 1b.
Wingbase with blue scalings.
UnH postdiscal white band stops before vein 1a , not extending past it.

Many thanks, Dr Seow for the ID of the Common Onyx specimen. I was mistaken and wrongly thought that the HW band did not cross below vein 1a.
It is great that we finally have a definitive proof with a specimen that Common Onyx is still extant in Singapore.
