Its been a while since i ask for ID since i've yet to step out of Singapore in a bit. With holidays coming, visited Penang hill for some butterflies and have a couple of ID that i would like to ask for.

1 - Amathusia friderici? Only angle

1. Should be correct as Amathusia friderici female.
HW 4th band from base is irregularly constricte.
Upperside is very variable almost black in some.

Rather worn .
Full complement of marginal & submarginal spots.
HW spot 7 larger & darker.
No spot at base of space 7.
Usually grey & well contrasted.

FW blue band broad & irregular .FW & HW band do not lined up.

7. probably Halpe wantona.

This belongs to a pair of species stated in the key to be not separable.
They both have a paler discal area marked by dark interneural spots.
The diffrence is based on an educated guess.

Interneural dark spots narrower with sharp ends, so there is always a postdiscal series of paler spots from FW to HW.

Inter neural dark spots broad with rounded ends , so the postdiscla pale spots are much reduced often as a narrow band.

The two species Euploea doubledayi & eyndhovii are very confusing in appearance.


They once were probbaly one species that have differentiated as E. doubledayi on the continent & as E eyndhovii in Sundaland.

When Malaya rejoins the mainland E doubledayi have gradually move south while eyndhovii moves north into Indochinese region.

E. doubledayi is only known mostly in the northern half of P. Malaysia.


Euploea doubledayi.
Lager, may be nearly twice the size of E. eyndhovii.
AS large as E mulciber or larger.
Male upperside appearing blue black.
Female UpF with several white spots.
UnH with the discal spots weak or obscure.

It is doubtful if E. doubledayi have cross the sea into Penang.
All Penang records are probably E. eyndhovii.
Check the size.

Hw postdiscal spot 6 under spot 7.
FW postdiscal band partially dislocated.
HW teeth with broad bases.
Pale ochreous markings.

I am afraid I cant tell if they are E. doubledayi from the pictures.

The Striped Blue Crow E. mulciber is a very common species, & E. doubledayi is around the same size.
The female doubledayi is also distinctive in having central white spots on the upperside FW.
In contrast the female E. eyndhovii is plain brown on the FW upperside.

E. eyndhovii is found in Penang. The status of E. doubledayi is inknown.
