View Full Version : ID of Mantoides gama

The attached images were all taken (different dates) at Omkoi, nw Thailand. I've had these in my collection for several years labelled as Jacoona anasuja nigerrima, but recently it has been drawn to my attention that Mantoides gama maga also is likely to occur in the same area.

Looking at these images I feel that it's likely there are two species here. I note differences in the contrast between the upper and lower wings on the first two photos, as well as more blue scaling on them, plus the shape and positioning of the black lines and tornal spots.

My feeling is Image 1 and 2 are indeed Jacoona anasuja, but images 3 amd 4 relate to Mantoides gama.

You are quite right.
1 & 2 are Jacoona anasuja and 3 & 4 are Mantoides gama.

Jacoona anasuja.
HW with a black basal bar.
Male in addition have the FW radius (upper arm of cell) basally black.

Mantoides gama.
Wingbases unmarked in both sexes; postdiscal streaks widely dislocated in a steplike arrangement.
