New Book launched - Butterflies of India

Our counterparts at the Bombay Natural History Society will be launching their new book, Butterflies of India tomorrow. I've contributed some photos to help fill the gaps in the author's collection of photos of some species which can be found both in Singapore and India. :)

Congrats to Isaac Kehimkar of Mumbai, and we have another book on butterflies in the world community. :cheers:

Dear Khew ,

I am very happy to inform that finally the book on butterflies is ready for the launch on Thursday 5th June, 2008 at Hornbill House at 6. 30 p.m. Mrs. Usha Thorat, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India will release the book. Mrs. Thorat is a keen nature enthusiast, conservationist, and was formerly the Vice President of the BNHS.

I take this opportunity to invite you for the release function of The Book of Indian Butterflies, which I have worked and waited for almost a decade. I thank you for bearing up with me and sharing your excellent images for the book. Due photo credit is given along side of your image in the book. [EarlyStages]

FYI: This 500-page hardbound book, which illustrates 735 species in color, also discusses such subjects as butterfly watching, photography, gardening, conservation, variation, behavior, adaptations, migration, and biogeography. It is published jointly by the Bombay Natural History Society and Oxford University Press (distributor), and retails in India for Rs 1500 – currently a little more than US$35. (Unfortunately for me, the book contains minimal information on immature stages and larval hostplants.)

Anyway, Isaac has replied to me, and I've made an order of 15 copies of the book from the BNHS. Have to sort out how to transfer the money over there, cos they don't accept international cheques. :sweat:

Ok, Isaac and BNHS have replied and the total order of the books including freight charges and GST would come up to a total of US$45 per book. If we get lucky and the Singapore side does not charge GST, then the cost will be lower by 7% correspondingly. But this is the worse-case scenario.

Please confirm that you want this book by this Friday evening as I will have to respond with a telegraphic funds transfer to BNHS before they ship the order out.

After I made the enquiries, the author said that he was not able to give us any discounts and it may be better to just order the book directly from the publishers. Upon checking out the prices, it would be a lot cheaper for someone to buy the book in India and bring it back.

As I now travel rather regularly to Bangalore for work, I can try to bring in a few copies each time when I go there. No promises though. My next trip there will be at the end of this month.
