Compared this with C&P4 looked like the suffusa... but looked at checklist photos realised this butterfly looks too yellow?
Saw it once. One record shot.

Could be a female.
Females are supposed to be more yellow on the underside.:grin2:

but there's no distinct gold shading towards the tail like the pictures in the checklist...

Ellen,
Shot at the first or second place visited today?
For awhile we were speculating if it is actually a Suffused flash.
Believe Khew and CP shot this too yesterday, I saw two in the last couple of days.
Cheers!

ER... which is the first and which is the second again?
It's a little way off from the pygmies that Anthony lurrrrvvesss sooooo much... :)
THEN again... when I compare it with Khew's old photograph from his old website... it looks like lei.... THEN again... if you read CP4... how come the male butterfly size varies across the underside the upperside... do you think they wrongly labelled the underside???
I'm confusing myself in a circle of photographs and literature and internet

Ellen ,
Sometimes there are no straight answers in some of our doubt....
I have a couple of shots around that areas too , as they dun appear to be a suffused flash visually , so in it goes to my UFO bin..... till one day we have more evidence to suggest otherwise.
Just compare your shot on the left to the Female Suffused Flash on the right...... do you feel you have doubt if it is a female Suffused Flash?

wow... the difference is so obvious...
1) length of the tail
2) really that missing gold shading
3) I really didn't saturate my photo that much... even in raw completely unprocessed there is NO shade of gold
4) The bordering lines on the wings are also dark as compared to the suffused.
No idea what it is... hope to see it again tho :)

I was amazed by the distinct tone in the hindwing and forewing. It looked very similar to L410a (male R. suffusa suffusa) in the Thai reference. Are there any other reference plates?

A rather yellowish batch of Rapala which was flying around in various locations there. I also got a long shot of a male, like what CP shot. The disc-like bump on the underside of the hindwing is consistent with many of the other species in the genus.

Mark and Chung Pheng ,
Thanks for sharing your shots.
Ellen's shot (Top)the forewing shape is consistent with the females of the genus with more rounder forewing towards the apex.
Chung Pheng's shot (Bottom) with more pointed forewing and the bump on the hindwing is a male.... Mark's shot the characteristics are similar to CP's.
Marking and coloration of both shots points towards that this two are of the same species.
