Spotted this at lower pierce, wonder if this is Purple Duke (Eulaceura osteria kumana)? :cheers:

Thanks Khew for the confirmation. Looking closely at the proboscis, seems kind of weird (as in Short)...?

I guess you shot it when it was in the process of retracting its proboscis. :thinking:

That was a good guess...anyway I saw the proboscis still hanging that way when it flew around, I was a little curious and puzzled too..:)

Why does half the proboscis look like it's coiled up while the other half is extended?

i think u are looking at the coil as a separate probe. Hee hee. Its one probe la. Maybe its tongue got stuck. Or its pfffting cher hen big time. Keke

The two parts of proboscis have not or failed to zip up.

Yes, the proboscis is a single organ made up of two fused parts so the fact that each part is moving independently in this case is highly abnormal.

Yes, and if the butterfly is disturbed while zipping the proboscis up(just after eclosion), it might not do it correctly... So the butterfly can't feed and will die...:cry:
