Iraota distanti distanti

Spotted Silverstreak

Family: Lycaenidae
Subfamily: Lycaeninae
Genus Iraota
Species: distanti
Subspecies: distanti
Common Name: Spotted Silverstreak
Life History: incomplete
Extant in countries: •Singapore

Description
The male of this butterfly is purple with broad black borders, whilst the female is a steely blue. The brown underside bears a series of white and blue spots. It possesses two pairs of tails as with the other species in this genus.

Habitat & Habits
Iraota distanti distanti is one species that eluded the early researchers of Singapore's butterflies as both the available books did not indicate that this species existed in Singapore. Having been spotted once in the mid 90's and thought to be a rare stray, this species has again been seen recently within the nature reserves.

This freshly hatched female is an indication of the species' status here in Singapore, where it is likely to be surviving in the nature reserves. As with many of the rarer Lycaenids, they are seldom seen on the ground, preferring to remain at treetop levels of flowering trees.
